HOW DOES YOUR BANK RATE ON CITIZENSHIP?

As good citizens, we also expect our banks to be good citizens — supporting community lending, making banking services more widely available to the general public, and educating consumers.

This page shows how Cleveland's major commercial banks are doing in that regard, just published in the Plain Dealer.

We commend the Plain Dealer for its story on page one of its issue of Saturday November 18, 2006. Banks are big advertisers and it would have been easy for the PD to have given the story much less exposure. Because the printed story's ratings "box" didn't make it to the PD's website, we show the statistics below.

RATING THE BANKS

Cleveland graded banks that do business with the city based on their community reinvestment performance. A perfect score is 60 points. The rankings, best to worst:

2  Fifth Third Bank 48.0
3  U.S. Bank 47.0
4  Huntington Bank 43.0
5  Sky Bank 38.3
6  First Merit Bank 38.0
7  JP Morgan Chase 37.3
8  National City Bank 35.6
9  Charter One Bank 28.3
