Blasts From The Past - The Old Stores at Shaker Square

Some Shaker Square places have stayed in the memory for a long time.

On the Square "we" have memories of many places including John Wade Records, Miller Drug, Bunce Brothers the Colony Theatre and Stouffers Restaurant (ah, the Tack Room). Just west of the Square: Halle's (shown above). East of the Square: Heinen's and Bonwit Teller. South: Clarks Restaurant on Van Aken at Drexmore and Caminati's on South Moreland.

"We", of course, are folks who spent years living near the Square - as high school or college students, recent graduates or young couples. Now in our 40s, 50s and older, many of our sweet memories of those years include those places.

As we find tales and pictures of these old places on the web, we plan to link to them.

Our first link (and the inspiration for this page) was a Plain Dealer story today (2/12/2010) by John Soeder, that was full of memories of the old John Wade Records shop, in the northeast quadrant, just easy of where the Popcorn Shop stands today: Marc Cohn's next album has roots in a Cleveland record store. On Marc's website he tells how as a boy of eight he would walk from his home on Larchmere to the Square. (read his posting)

By the way, the same Valentines Day Plain Dealer, in a story "The Big Night Out" tells how Cleveland's "dynamic duos" would plan a romantic night out (read the story). Several east side couples include Shaker Square restaurants in their plans for the evening. How good to be a place for yesterday's memories and for today's too.
