Reunite Shaker Square

A message to Blaine Griffin, President of Cleveland City Council, who represents Ward 6, just northwest of Shaker Square.

To Council President Blaine Griffin:

Your Ward 6 is our neighbor and for many years you've been a friend of Shaker Square, quietly supporting it where you could.

Late in 2021 your leadership of City Council put Shaker Square in strong hands and averted the uncertain future that foreclosure would have brought.

Cleveland City Council is now redistricting, as the law requires, reducing its wards from 17 to 15, each somewhat larger in area.

Like the Council President 10 years ago, your say in the process is important.

On December 12, when you shared the proposed 15-ward map with the public, your strongest words were "We are not splitting any neighborhoods!"

Shaker Square is the historic heart of one of Cleveland's largest and most diverse residential areas.

The proposed map splits the Shaker Square neighborhood!

Since Shaker Square was created, no ward map has ever separated the Square from the streets around it. Now, for the first time, North and South Moreland Boulevard divide two wards: 6 and 3.

It's a problem easily resolved. The southeastern corner of your Ward 6 (shown in blue on the map above) could include the streets east to the Cleveland City limit, streets that the proposed map shows in Ward 3.

Please bring us together.
